Abstract

Introduction: the lack of interest and apathy among high school students regarding traditional linear reading pose a critical pedagogical challenge; traditional teaching practices and the integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) that amounts to little more than the passive replacement of physical materials fosters disinterest and low reading engagement. Objective: to implement a didactic strategy using the CapCut tool to strengthen reading habits and the development of communicative competencies among first-year high school students within the Ecuadorian educational context. Methodology: the study employed a mixed-methods approach (qualitative focus) with a descriptive-explanatory scope, action research, and an experimental intervention design. A semi-structured qualitative interview was conducted with a sample of six teachers (N=6) for the initial diagnosis, and student performance was assessed via a targeted survey. Results: the diagnosis confirmed that traditional rote-learning methods lead to immediate cognitive fatigue, while prior ICT use was merely instrumental (PowerPoints and PDFs). Following the intervention, the CapCut-based strategy met with unanimous approval. The illustrated-text method served as a rigorous learning tool, compelling students to synthesize information, prioritize plotlines, and decipher written metaphors to translate them into audiovisual language, thereby effectively neutralizing mechanical plagiarism from the internet. Conclusion: producing short videos and images in CapCut supported by the scaffolding of a preliminary script acts as a powerful cognitive mediator. It transforms the student from a passive recipient into a multimedia consumer, qualitatively enhancing intrinsic motivation, creativity, and critical reading comprehension in the high school setting. General field of study: Educational Sciences. Specific field of study: Didactics of Language, Literature, and New Technologies. Type of study: Original article.
