Tobacco effects and periodontal disease

Abstract

A descriptive and cross-sectional research was carried out to determine the prevalence and severity of periodontal disease in adolescent smokers, from Catalina de Güines, from October 2018 to November 2020. The universe consisted of 96 smoking patients between 10 and 20 years of age of both sexes who attended the consultation. They were contacted with prior consent; interrogation and oral examination were carried out to fill out a data collection form. The statistical analysis of the percentages was performed using contingency tables through test X2. It was concluded that the male sex predominated (67%), only 11.3% of adolescent smokers did not show signs of periodontal inflammation, the longer the time of exposure to the habit, the more severe the signs of periodontal involvement, the amount of Cigarettes consumed daily was not decisive and poor oral hygiene prevailed (56.5%).
